Hey… did you know that tuning isn’t only about making cars more obnoxious and louder? It’s actually mostly about improving performance, be it power and torque or fuel efficiency. All to gain full confidence when accelerating, overtaking or merging onto a highway, as well as to save fuel under regular driving conditions.

Yep, you read that correctly: by having your BMW engine tuned, you can make it less thirsty. Not only that, with a proper tune, you are also looking at potential increases in reliability.

But how do you go about ? Read on to find out the most important aspects of it and see which bimmer engines are good performance improvement candidates.

What Makes a BMW Engine Good for a Tune Up?

There are only a handful of “ingredients” that determine whether or not an engine is right for tuning. That being said, each of them is very important, so if you are considering a BMW tune, take a look at the list below.

  1. Aspiration type – turbocharged engines are much more tuneable than naturally aspirated ones, because there are more parameters that can be controlled to affect the performance.
  2. Design durability – what you want from a good tuning platform is plenty of OEM reliability. The tune itself will help improve the longevity, but the more robust an engine is from the factory, the more safety margins you’ll have.
  3. Engine condition – for tuning, a BMW engine has to be well maintained, according to a regular checkup schedule, along with timely oil and filter changes, and spark plug inspections.

Based on those three aspects, it’s easier to specify which power plants are better suited for tuning than others. So, what are they?

BMW Engines Perfect for Tuning

In the world of various BMW performance upgrades, there are a couple of designs that are definitely tune-worthy. They are characterized by respectable durability margins and reasonable factory power output. Additionally, they are relatively well thought out, at least in most cases.

Let’s dive deeper into the specifics of the abovementioned engines.

BMW B58 Engine Specs and Reliability

BMW B58 ENGINE

The largest of the Bavarians’ modular power plant family, the BMW B58 engine is their latest representative of the inline-six breed introduced in 2015. Depending on the variant and application, it pumps out 322–382 HP and 450–500 Nm of torque. It has forged aluminum piston rods and crankshaft, as well as a closed deck block.

This means the design is very robust from the get-go and it can handle power gains well. It also greatly aids the reliability of the BMW B58 engine, giving it a long-lasting potential, which can be improved even more with appropriate BMW B58 tune… But more on that later.

The BMW B58 engine is used on almost all current production 40i bimmers, including:

  • BMW 340i (F30/F31/F34)
  • BMW 440i (F32/F33/F36)
  • BMW M240i (F22/F23)
  • BMW 540i (G30/G31)
  • BMW M340i (G20/G21)
  • BMW M440i (G22)
  • BMW M240i (G42)

BMW B48 Engine Specs and Reliability

BMW B46 & B48 ENGINE

Another representative of the modular family, the comes in the shape of a more compact four-banger. The Bavarians managed to squeeze out 154–255 HP and 250–400 Nm of torque from it. Thanks to the modularity of the designs, the very same forged piston rods that go into the B58 are also used in B48. In addition, similarly to its bigger brother, the inline-four also has a closed deck aluminum engine block.

Although the B engines are all relatively new, their hefty internal components bode really well for their base longevity. They also make for a solid tuning platform.

In what cars can you find the BMW B48 engine?

  • BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, and 5 Series 20i, 30i or 30e models after 2014
  • MINI Cooper S (F56)
  • Toyota Supra (J29)

BMW B46 Engine Specs and Reliability

Despite the BMW B46 engine being almost identical to the B48, it’s still worth explaining the different numbering. After all, you might’ve already come across this designation. BMW B46 is basically a version of B48 that complies with the American SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) requirements. The changes include distinct air intake, sensors, catalytic converters, and factory tune adjusted to those parts.

From the perspective of BMW ECU tuning or reliability, there are no significant differences between the two. The B46 was installed basically in the same models as B48, only destined for the US market.

BMW B38 Engine Specs and Reliability

BMW B38 ENGINE

The smallest and the first engine of the modular B family, this inline-three was introduced in 2013 along with the BMW i8 hybrid. The two versions it comes in (1.2 and 1.5 L) are available with outputs of 74–228 hp and 150–320 NM of torque.

Although it might seem like a lot of horses out of such a tiny engine, thanks to its durable construction, you still have some room for extra power gains. But, most importantly, engine tuning can help you take some load off of it.

As the lowest-displacement member of the family, B38 engine was meant for the lower trims of BMWs and the budget cars like:

  • F20/F21 BMW 118i (2015–2019)
  • F30/F31 BMW 318i LCI (2015–2019)
  • F40 BMW 118i (2019–present)
  • F44 BMW 218i Gran Coupé (2019–present)
  • F22/F23 BMW 218i (2015–present)
  • F45/F46 BMW 218i Active Tourer/Gran Tourer (2014–present)

BMW N54 Engine Specs and Reliability

BMW N54 ENGINE

Introduced in 2006, the BMW N54 was the Bavarians’ first turbocharged gasoline engine. It took advantage of two turbos to produce 302–335 hp and 400–450 Nm of torque. Similarly to the later B58 engine, it used forged internal components (piston rods and crankshaft), but its engine block was of open deck design.

The BMW N54 engine is able to handle increased boost pressures really well and has a lot of potential for longevity improvements with ECU tuning. Below you’ll find a short list of models that were powered by this power plant:

  • BMW 335i (E90/E91/E92/E93)
  • BMW 535i (E60/E61)
  • BMW 135i (E82/E88)
  • BMW X6 xDrive35i (E71)
  • BMW Z4 sDrive35i (E89)
  • BMW 740i (F01)
  • BMW 335is (E92/E93)
  • BMW 1 Series M Coupe (E82)
  • BMW Z4 sDrive35is (E89)

BMW N55 Engine Specs and Reliability

BMW N55 ENGINE

An evolution of the previous design, the BMW N55 engine was produced from 2009 and gradually replaced the N54 in many applications. It was rated at 302–365 hp and 400–465 Nm of torque, depending on the version. Instead of two turbos, BMW used only one twin-scroll turbocharger, which made the motor lighter than the N54.

Similarly to its predecessor, the BMW N55 engine is quite strong and tolerates power increases well. This means that along with taking a few years off of it, with tuning you’ll be able to gain some extra “juice,” to help you overtake other cars swiftly.

  • BMW 535i (F10/F11/F07)
  • BMW 335i (E90/E91/E92/E93)
  • BMW 135i (E82/E88)
  • BMW X3 xDrive35i (F25)
  • BMW 335i (E70)
  • BMW 335i (F30/F31)
  • BMW X6 xDrive 35i (E71)
  • BMW X1 xDrive35i (E84)
  • BMW 435i (F32/F33/F36)

BMW N20 Engine Specs and Reliability

If you are into Bavarian engines, you might think that the BMW N20 isn’t really suitable for tuning. Although it had its share of problems right after its inception, they have mostly been solved. Moreover, one of the issues that troubled this design was related to high intake air temperatures it experienced. Which is something that can be easily remedied by a proper ECU tune that will lower how hot the engine is running overall.

Introduced in 2011, this turbo inline-four was a replacement for a naturally aspirated straight-six N53 engine. It came in two displacement versions (1.6 and 2.0 L) and produced 168–241 hp and 250–350 Nm of torque.

As a predecessor of the B48, it was installed in a similar range of cars (with the exception of 30i BMW models) until it was replaced by the latter after 2017. Examples of N20-powered vehicles include:

  • BMW 220i/228i (F22)
  • BMW 320i/328i (F30)
  • BMW 320i/328i GT (F34)
  • BMW 420i/428i (F32)
  • BMW 520i/520Li/525Li/528i (F10)

BMW Engines Good for Tuning – Honorable Mentions

Apart from the power plants described up to this point, there are also other BMW engines that are really well-suited for ECU tuning. They are at the bottom of the list not because of their small potential, but due to the fact that they already are extremely powerful in their stock form.

However, if you wanted to, their durable internal components offer great safety reserves for additional power gains. So, which of these designs are a perfect match for engine tuning?

  • BMW S55 – a performance version of the N55 introduced in the BMW M3 (F80), with different variants producing 275–493 hp and up to 600 Nm of torque. Manufactured from 2014 to 2021.
  • BMW S63 – the strongest engine currently offered in the Bavarian lineup, this twin-turbo 4.4 L V8 powers the top-of-the-line M cars, like BMW M5 (F90) and M8 (F91/92/93), as well as their Competition variants. Produced from 2009, this power plant makes up to 635 hp and 750 Nm of torque.
  • BMW S58 – based on the B58 but heavily revised, this engine debuted in BMW X3 M (F97) and X4 M (F98) in 2019. Currently still in production and used on models like the latest BMW M3 (G80), it pumps out 453–503 hp and 550–650 Nm of torque.

How to Tune a BMW Engine Safely?

BMW ECU CHANGING PARAMETERS USING A NOTEBOOK

There are many variables that have to be taken into account when tuning an engine. If you were to try changing any parameters within your BMW’s ECU, you would be at risk of damaging or even destroying the engine. Because of this, a remote tuning service like is your best bet.

Awaken Performance by BimmerTech

During an online coding session, their technician does everything for you: they introduce necessary ECU changes and make your engine work at a lower operating temperature. As a result, it also drinks less gasoline (if you don’t change your driving style), and delivers power more smoothly. All while increasing the longevity of your car.

How to Take Care of a BMW Engine after Tuning?

After you’ve decided to give BMW ECU tuning a go, just don’t neglect the maintenance of your car. Use the best quality fuels (octane rating higher than 93 in US and at least 98 in Europe) and motor oils, and regularly inspect everything. And, most importantly, enjoy your car as if it was brand new, again!

The G11/G12 BMW 7 Series of the current generation has received a new look for the facelift version, and the biggest changes can be seen at the exterior of the car where the oversized grilles can be seen immediately, the front bumper with the design of the BMW Vision Future Luxury Concept, the tail lights behind the car are joined together by an illuminated line using LED technology. The tail lights use the L shape seen on the new G20 BMW 3 Series and in my opinion it’s a better design.

Inside, small aesthetic improvements can be seen, among which the most striking improvement is the new instrument cluster design that is used in the new generation of BMW X5, G20 3 Series, Z4, respectively the all-new 8 Series. Some changes have been introduced to the control side of the safety systems where the buttons have been repositioned. The steering wheel has also received minor modifications and the infotainment system is represented by the new iDrive 7.

2020-G11-G12-BMW-7-Series-Facelift

A special advantage is that this facelifted BMW 7 Series can be personalized to the liking of the customers and can be fitted with the complete M package using Nappa top quality leather upholstery in several nuances that are part of the Exclusive range.

The new facelift of the BMW 7 Series is more than just a facelift and has brought great design and functionality improvements to match its rivals, Audi and Mercedes, with their models Audi A8 and Mercedes S Class. BMW has made a little bigger changes in order to “revive” the sales of this model until the new generation of the BMW 7 Series will be launched shortly.

The BMW 7 Series Facelift is 22mm longer than the non-facelift version, its width and height remaining the same size.

The Executive Lounge package offers the most luxurious package of this model and offers the following options: comfort seats with massage and ventilation for all passengers, air conditioning on 4 zones and rear passengers will have an infotainment system made of two 10-inch screens and a 7-inch tablet.

The interior is much better soundproofed and the windows are a bit thicker than the non facelift version, which gives the car a bigger comfort. As far as emissions are concerned, this model is in the Euro6 standard.

The G11/G12 BMW 7 Series facelift comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission with minor updates.

Below you can find pictures of the official images received from the fellows at BMW Group and we look forward to your impressions regarding this facelifted G11/G12 BMW 7 Series, if you are happy with the improvements made to this facelift or not. See you next time!

The power of the engines have also been enhanced. For instance, the BMW X3 M40d is now producing no less than 320 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque, all squeezed from a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, enabling a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. Also, in August, BMW will also introduce the X4 xDrive30d with a 3.0-liter diesel with 261 horsepower and 620 Nm of torque; paired to a high-performance eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive configuration, the model can jump to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

The transmissions have also been modified. For instance, there is the new eight-speed automatic, available from August on models from the 1-Series (12oi, M140i) or the 3-, 4- and the 5-Series (520d Sedan, 520d Touring).

BMW 7-Series` top of the line M760i was officially unveiled during the 2016 Los Angeles Auto, the luxury saloon almost instantly winning the hearts of those BMW passionate in search for thrill and high-end taste.

However, journalists around the world have asked themselves if the model is worth the $180K price tag – I mean, it is twice as expensive as the entry-level 740i and around $17,000 more than Alpina`s latest B7 Bi-Turbo.

In the video presentation below, automotive news and car reviewer Doug DeMuro is trying to put the pieces together and explain if the car is worth the aforementioned price, providing facts and details about the car`s powertrain and so forth.

Usually, the value of a car is mostly given by the type of engine it comes with under the hood. And by comparison, the 760i`s massive and powerful 6.6-liter twin-turbo V12 is no match for the 740i entry-level which uses a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo. So, it is like putting together 600 horsepower versus 320 horsepower. In the flagship, the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is also done in a staggering 3.6 seconds, which is way too fast than the entry-level variant and even than the BMW M4.

Besides the outrageous engine and power output, a flagship model must also standout from a visual standpoint and suite of luxury equipment and technology inside the cabin.

And the BMW M760i features of plenty of technology like gesture controls, smart key, advanced 360-degree camera system and tablets. The gizmos are in perfect contrast with high-end and premium leather upholstery.

So what is it that it is recommended with the high-price mentioned above? You can find out more details and insights in the video exposed below by Doug DeMuro! Would you pay $180K for such an exclusive 7-Series model, even more expensive than the current Alpina B7 Bi-Turbo? Please comment in the section area below!

When you think of BMW, you think of performance, elegance and precision. German engineering, most would agree, does not have rivals often. Even so, there are situations where errors appear. For a respected car manufacturer such as BMW, the main concern is customer satisfaction, which means that sometimes huge efforts have to be made in order to fix any faults that the producer might have overseen. As it happens, BMW has decided to recall 11,700 vehicles in order to fix an issue with the engine management software.

While the fault might not be that noticeable at first, rest assured that it could be dangerous if left unfixed. Simply looking at the way BMW decided to handle things is proof of how dangerous an issue with the car’s engine management software can be. The wrongly installed software, as BMW discovered, was the main problem for a couple of 5 Series and 7 Series models. While the issue does not seem to be quite hard to fix, the sheer number of affected vehicles meant a lot of time had to be spent in order to fix the issue.

BMW’s fast response shows the determination of the Bavarian automaker when it comes to satisfying its customers. Reputation can be increased greatly in such situations, on account of a professional approach regarding problem solving. Customers will not always check for a manufacturer to make as little mistakes as possible. They will also look at how that certain manufacturer solves unpredictable issues that may appear along the way. This issue with BMW’s engine management software for some models is an example of such a critical moment, in which the manufacturer has to react quickly and with great precision.

BMW has proven once again that it values its customers beyond any other thing. Thanks to the Bavarian automaker’s constant care for those that buy its products, BMW might actually have gained reputation instead of losing it, reputation that will prove valuable over time. The 11,700 vehicles in question will be fixed by BMW without any charge. This move shouldn’t surprise anybody, as the fault for this issue lies with the automaker and not the owners. All that remains to be seen is how fast BMW will manage to repair the 11,700 cars and how satisfied each owner will be with the time taken to fix the issue.

BMW has already gotten us used to its exclusive models. It is something quite characteristic of such a brand to offer at times factory improved limited versions of its more mundane models. The BMW 750i XL L7 V12 is a different story, though. Only 899 such models were made. The car itself is more than a slight improvement over an already existing model. It is itself a car model that is probably one of the rarest BMW will ever produce.

The outside of the car is rather simple. One thing that will catch your eye, as the name suggests, is the extended body of the car. It looks quite interesting. The 20” rims on this particular model give the car a more stylish aspect. The metallic gray paintjob is just right for a car like this. It is not flashy at all. In fact, it contributes to the stylish look of the car. The car’s exterior is in perfect condition. You can’t tell that this BMW 750i XL L7 V12 is almost 17 years old.

While the interior has probably more signs of the car’s age in comparison with the exterior, it too looks well maintained. With this particular BMW variant of the car a lot of gadgets have been included. Apart from the standard CD player, a multifunction steering wheel, a satellite navigation system and electric comfort rear seats were added. The car itself was clearly designed to offer as much comfort as possible. Nothing seems to be exaggerated with the interior design. Just like the exterior the car’s interior is stylish, but not flashy.

The engine of the BMW 750i XL L7 V12, as the name may suggest, is a 5.4 liter V12 that outputs 321HP. With such an engine the car is as fast as it is stylish. The only problem with this powerful engine is that it may cause over steer for this particular model on account of the car being rear-wheel drive. Add to this the extended body of the car and stability could really prove to be an issue at higher speeds with the BMW 750i XL L7 V12.

The price tag for this particular BMW 750i XL L7 V12 is 26.500 dollars. Without a doubt, for what you get, this vehicle is well priced and will probably catch the attention of some car collector. Having been run only 19.800km, the car has not been used a lot. This, in fact, proves why this particular BMW was kept in such a good shape.

Even if the almighty 7-Series from BMW lacks that M potent version that everybody has been dreaming about it for many years, the sorrow has been sweetened a little bit by the top of the line 760Li xDrive version, an exceptional model that comes with outstanding performance.

And until a potent M variant, this remains the fastest within its class, even faster than the M5. The video below finds it running the whole 0 to 100 km/h straight line in a blast – it takes just 3.7 seconds for the whole deal, being 0.7 seconds faster that the M5 and managing almost the same time as the Alpina B7 xDrive.

With such an astonishing performance, who needs an M7? Well, just kidding. Even so, the BMW M760Li xDrive is an exceptional piece of German engineering, and perhaps the only reason for not building a much more potent M variant for the moment.

It comes with exceptional driving capabilities, highlighted by advanced mechanics, and despite its massive body style, is extremely fast. It packs a massive V12 engine with two turbochargers, which leads to 592 horsepower, available at 5,500 rpm and 800 Nm of torque, available at as low as 1,500 rpm. The whole deal is sent to the wheels via an M eight-speed automatic transmission.

You can find out more details in the short video below released by BMW on one of its Facebook page. Enjoy the video and tell us what you think about the car`s speed? Does BMW really need an M model to take things further to another level?

There is nothing gorgeous and sublime than driving an astonishing 7-Series model with exceptional features from BMW Individual, starting with the exterior colour and finishing with impressive performance under the hood.

The below BMW M760Li xDrive is the closest thing ever to the carmaker`s M Performance arm, the model coming with high-end exterior features and luxury items inside. Not to mention the enormous power under the hood.

Visually, you can personalize this BMW M760Li xDrive with a suite of colours from BMW`s Individual catalog, but none would look handsome like this Individual Dark Brown metallic paint. Add the 20-inch light alloy wheels with double spoke design and you have one aggressive looker.

Inside, the cabin is also tweaked with the same high-end features from the BMW Individual, such as full fine-grain Merino leather in Cashmere Beige, with trim engraved with BMW Individual lettering. The same lettering is also found on the headrests, adding as well the BMW Individual headliner covered in Anthracite Alcantara.

As for the car`s performance under the hood, this lad here is packing a twin-turbocharged V12 engine, with whopping 592 horsepower and mind-blowing 800 Nm of torque. This allows an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, and that despite its massive size. However, the suite of high-tech safety systems and advanced mechanics make it extremely powerful.

You can find out more about the BMW M760Li xDrive Individual in the media gallery below. Enjoy and don’t forget to share your impressions with us!
