When you think of BMW, you most likely think of one of the biggest car brands in the world, as well as the quality and the luxury the German automaker includes in all its products. You don’t necessarily think of the boldness behind BMW’s more customer oriented policy. It is this less seen aspect of BMW that will be discussed in the following article.

With the use of its new BMW M5 model, BMW managed to set a new longest drift world record, replacing Toyota’s previous performance. The previously recorded 102 mile record was replaced by the unbelievable 232.5 mile BMW performance. It Is true that none of this would have been possible, were it not for Johan Schwartz, one of BMW’s best driving instructors, behind the wheel of the 2018 BMW M5. The driver’s expertise matched the provided car’s performance, in order to form the perfect duo capable of breaking the longest drift record.

BMW Sets New Longest Drift Record with the Help of a 2018 BMW M5

The attempt to break the previously set record was set to begin at BMW’s Performance Center, where Johan Schwartz was required to drift in the 2018 BMW M5 for no less than 8 hours. Of course, in order for this to be possible, the car needed a couple of refills. Wanting to up the stakes of the record, BMW decided to refill the car while it was still drifting with the help of an F10 M5, a couple of high performance gadgets and a well trained stuntman. The result: BMW managed to also break the record for longest twin vehicle drift, setting it at 49.25 miles.

At this point, what remains to be seen is if Toyota will respond in any way to BMW’s success at setting a new longest drift world record. Will Toyota attempt to reclaim the record as its own, or will it acknowledge BMW’s success? For BMW the experiment proved successful. BMW had to win a lot more than just fame. Marketing wise the folks over at BMW, through the stunt they pulled, also managed to show the world how efficient their vehicles really are. Breaking two records in the same day is definitely something worth noting.

No matter how you look at it, celebrations are in order at BMW’s HQ. Thanks to Johan Schwartz and the 2018 BMW M5, the German automaker, once again, proved its supremacy in the automotive industry. It remains to be seen if the new set world record for longest drift will remain unchanged for a long time. It will be equally interesting to see who will attempt to break the record and whether or not the attempt will end up in success.

Everyone knows that BMW made and still make some of the most advanced and luxurious cars in the world, also with less fuel consumption or electric cars, because of the advanced technology that BMW develops day by day. BMW has won numerous awards last years, and now it is the moment for the BMW’s flagship, BMW 7 Series, that was launched last fall to win the “2016 World Luxury Car of The Year” at the New York International Auto Show.

The “World Luxury Car” category was first added in 2014, on that year the winner of the “World Luxury Car” title was the Mercedes S-Class and again, in 2015, Mercedes won the title with its S-Class Coupe. 2016 is the 3rd year of the “World Luxury Car” event and BMW’s 7 Series manages to win the prestigious “World Luxury Car Of the Year” award. BMW 7 Series is a top car that provides comfort and luxury at high standards and that uses 25 technologies of which 13 were awarded for the high class segment. Among the newer technologies we can enumerate some of them: Active Gesture Control, Carbon Core to reduce weight (this means more driving dynamics and performance), ambient “sky lounge” sunroof and others. Do these technologies sound well, right? Yes!

The competition’s name is “World Car Awards” and was supported by 73 top automotive journalists from different countries who have declared the BMW 7 Series, the winner of the title.

The World Car jurors observed that,

“This is the flagship model for the Bavarian car maker, and so it simply has to be the epitome of what the brand represents in terms of technology, design and performance. And the new 7 Series certainly delivers. It is very much the new face of BMW in the new family design – and yet it is a classic BMW all at once. The new 7 Series brings in new features like the ambient ‘sky lounge’ sunroof, the ambient air package and the all-new gesture control.”

Dr. Ian Robertson (BMW AG), added,

“We are delighted and honoured that the BMW 7 Series has been recognised as the World Luxury Car of the Year. Since it launched last autumn, the response from both the media and our customers has been extremely positive, with people especially appreciative of the way the 7 Series combines superb modern luxury with the outstanding driving dynamics BMW is famous for.”

Congrats BMW!

The BMW i8 is currently the flagship model within the i range and even though it was revealed in 2013 at Frankfurt, it still gets some special attention. This time, the well-known Top Gear magazine awarded the German hybrid sports car with the Top Gear Car of the Year prize.

The BMW i8 is a perfect balance between high-performance and fuel economy. It packs a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery for a total output of 362 horsepower.

With such resources, it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 4,4 seconds with a top speed limited at 250 km/h.

Even though the 37 km range on electricity is not very impressive, the average fuel economy of 2,1 liters/100 km or 134,5 mpg UK is certainly a strong point in BMW’s favor.

Charlie Turner, Top Gear’s editor-in-chief, said that the BMW i8 is “a beautiful vision of the future, delivered now”. He also said that it is a kind of car that we should celebrate.

With the new year approaching, most new models have been announced, and the first list of the cars worthy of the 2014 Car of the Year Award has been drawn.

Car of the Year

BMW should be happy to see no lees than three of its models make it to the list. 27 other vehicles also made it on the list, as it seems they met the criteria. They are new models on sale now or in the near future in at least 5 European markets. They also need to have an estimated annual sales of at least 5.000 units.

So here is the list:
1. BMW 4 Series 2. BMW i3 3. BMW X5
4. Citroën C4 Picasso 5. Ford EcoSport 6. Ford Kuga
7. Hyundai i10 8. Jaguar F-Type 9. Kia Carens
10. Range Rover Sport 11. Lexus IS 12. Maserati Ghibli
13. Mazda3 14. Mercedes-Benz S-Class 15. Mitsubishi Space Star
16. Nissan Note 17. Opel Cascada 18. Peugeot 2008
19. Peugeot 308 20. Porsche Cayman 21. Renault Captur
22. Renault Zoe 23. Seat Leon 24. Skoda Octavia
25. Subaru Forester 26. Suzuki SX4 27. Tesla Model S

After Forbes magazine proclaimed BMW the most powerful car maker, BrandZ top 100 comes and says that this year BMW lost the title to the Japanese manufacturer, Toyota.

The market research that yielded these results was conducted by Millward Brown, and the difference between the two brand is not that big.

BMW i3

With a 12 percent increase, Toyota now stands at 24.5 billion USD value, while BMW stands at 24 billion USD, seeing a 2 percent decrease. While Toyota has been number one from year 2006 and up to 2009, and then again in 2011, BMW provided plenty of competition, stealing the title in 2010 and 2012.

The market research attributed Toyota’s success on the fact that they were a big player in the electric vehicles market. Meanwhile, the reason why BMW lost the title was because the German car maker didn’t introduce new models on the market.

But next year, BMW plans a lot of new surprises like the highly anticipated BMW i3, which will not only be a completely new vehicle, it will represent a competitive player on the EV market. Time will tell if BMW will get back the title they won from the Japanese.

As I mentioned a few days ago, BMW funded a Hackathlon, a contest in which ideas about the electric vehicles and related problems went head to head to see which is best.

And now we finally have winners. For their brilliant innovation the winners got 3000 USD spread across seven different categories.

BMW Hackathlon

One of the more pressing matters that found a solution at this event involves electric cars being parked at charging station for extended periods of time. When another car might need just a quick charge to get home, the station would be blocked.

The solution came in the form of a smartphone app which allows drivers to sent an anonymous message to the driver currently charging his car and request access to the charging station. Of course, after the quick charge, they would hook up the first car again.

It is an elegant solution for using the scarce charging stations efficiently. The only problem I see with this solution is that it is based on an honesty system. And the human element in that system might prove to be faulty.
