Says Car and Driver, one the primary reasons for the lack of investigations is that privately run automakers have made the decision to launch their own recalls before ethe ODI has a chance to launch their own. The ODI is said to welcome these private investigations since it adds to their apparent measurement of success.

DOTIG has stated that ODI counts the number of vehicles that have been recalled instead of the number of potential safety defect investigations it has launched. In other words, they take credit where credit is not due.   

In the end, DOTIG has made more than a dozen recommendations to speed investigations up. The NHTSA has agreed with 10 of them thus far. They are still mulling over ways in which the government organization can meet their timeliness goals but did not agree with DOTs recommendation on developing across-the-board rules for negotiating manufacturers’ potential safety defects.   

Considering NHTSA’s response to the audit, DOTIG has openly said it now considers all 12 recommendations open and pending, but somehow, also “resolved.” But will any of this result in more and speedier recalls? The jury is said to still be out on that crucial issue.

One thing is for certain, the roads and highways in the U.S. are not getting any safer. While autonomous safety features like automatic braking and lane change warnings systems have helped in the reduction of some accidents, without an aggressive and finely tuned ODI, serious injuries and fatalities caused by vehicular collisions and faulty products will only continue for the foreseeable future.

Even in those more well-off countries, analysis shows that the proportion of car accidents is significantly higher in regions where the socio-economic status ranks lower (in terms of average income) as compared to areas with higher average incomes.

All of this means that your country’s GDP and your own personal earning potential are already working either for or against you when it comes to the probability of being involved in a car accident.

Age stands out as a statistic

There’s no getting away from the fact that age plays a role in all forms of car crash statistics. The fact is that if you are aged between 5-29 years, you are more likely to die in a car crash than if you are aged 0-4 or 30+. This mid range of 5-29 years represents children aged 5+ who are not likely to survive, and younger drivers who are likely to make poor driving decisions and place themselves (and their passengers) at risk. It should also be mentioned that whether the driver was male or female is part of the correlation between car accident death rates and age – we’ll go into this next.

Male / female – it matters

As you may have already guessed, it’s male drivers aged 25 and under who represent 73% of global car accident fatalities. If we were to round off the figures, we could say that young men are two thirds more likely than young women to be involved in a car accident. This is likely due to showing-off and taking more risks regarding speeding and paying less attention to the road by willingly diverting attention to distraction such as the radio or talking to friends.

In conclusion …

There are multiple reasons that people crash cars, and not all of them are down to driver error (sometimes, other factors such as mechanical failure or oil spills will play a role in the driver losing control of the vehicle). However, if you are from a lower socio-economic background, if you are male, and if you are aged 25 years or under, you may wish to take extra care, as this is the group globally associated with a heightened risk of death whilst driving.

When you choose to drive a BMW, one of the unfortunate side effects of this is that there is a chance that you might be involved in an accident in that car. Accidents can and do happen and it is rather surprising that many people throughout the UK simply don’t know what to do if they are involved in an accident in their car.

If you bump, scratch or even full on crash in your BMW, then here are some of the things that you need to make sure that you do.

Hitting someone else’s car that is parked

Whilst the majority of crashes that you can be involved in will tend to be when you are driving around and crash into another mobile vehicle. There is also a chance that you can crash into a car that is stationary, such as when the other car is parked.

If you hit a parked car then you are going to need to abide by the rules that are set out in the Road Traffic Act of 1988. This states that if you are involved in an accident that causes damage or injury to another person, another vehicle or another property, then you need to stop and provide your details; such as your name, address and vehicle registration.

It doesn’t matter if the damage is minimal, if the damage is just a scrape or a scratch. You still need to follow the correct procedure.

As well as providing your own details to the person who’s car you hit (often attaching them to the car for them to find) you also need to write down the registration of the car that you hit, as well as the time, date and place where the incident occurred. You should try and take photos of the damage that happened and if there were any witnesses to what happened, then you should also note this down.

The final step is to let your insurance company know what has happened. It doesn’t matter if you are going to make a claim or not. You still need to let them know and this should be within 24 hours of the incident.

Being involved in a crash with a moving car

If you have been involved in a crash with another moving car then the process to follow is similar to that when you crash into a parked car. However, when this occurs there is also a chance that there will be an injury to you or the other person, as well as the debris and cars blocking the road. If this is the case, then you need to make sure that you call 999 and report the incident.

You also need to make sure that you are safe, and that everyone else on the road is safe too. Try and keep clear of the road, however, if it is safe to move anything off of the road, then try and do this too.

Once you are safe, you need to exchange personal details with the other person as well as note down the incident details and take photographs of the damage, the cars and their positions on the road too.

You also need to make sure that you let the police know what has happened, even if it is minor and even if it doesn’t seem necessary. You can do this by calling 101 or by reporting it to your local police station.
